The Purpose Of The Writing Assessment
The assessment is a part of the State Proficiency Examination Program administered at grade
eight. Its purpose is to provide administrators, teachers, parents, and students with
information about student proficiency in writing that will help students improve their
skills in writing.
How The Assessment Is Scored
State students in grade eight have a sample of their writing scored by two trained teachers
who independently read the paper and assign scores of one to five in each of the traits. The
scores are then averaged for each trait, so the writer receives four scores.
A score of three denotes a piece of writing that demonstrates proficiency in that trait for
the grade level. The scores on all four traits are added together to give a complete score.
A composite score of 12 or higher demonstrates proficiency.
